How can a need for lighting strengthen refugee communities?
Globally, there are an estimated 79.5 million refugees.
On average a refugee will spend 4 years in a camp.
So why are they designed to disappear?
No refugee camp is exactly alike.
“Before the lights, Gender-Based Violence was rampant… Solar lights help reduce GBV at water points… perpetrators feel ashamed. They fear to be exposed.”
Safety and lighting
Lighting in refugee camps means . . .
A merry-go-round is the perfect play-based generator.
How could it be built in Bidi Bidi using local sustainable materials and no power tools?
Bamboo is incredibly strong, and can be cut and fastened with basic tools. It also grows naturally in Uganda.
